Middlesbrough star fires warning at Nottingham Forest ahead of Leeds United clash

Middlesbrough defender Ryan Shotton has one eye on his side's clash with Nottingham Forest ahead of a crunch showdown with Leeds United later this week.

The former Derby County man will be keen to help halt Boro's poor run of form that has seen them slip to within three points of the relegation place.

Jonathan Woodgate's 20th-placed side haven't won since New Year's Day, when a four-match winning streak boosted them up to 16th place.

But a run of ten games without a win in all competitions has seen confidence drop and the 1-0 reverse at Barnsley on Saturday heightened fears of relegation.

Shotton, though, is taking these big games against promotion-chasing Forest and Leeds in his stride, with Marcelo Bielsa's side up first on Wednesday night (7.45pm).

Back-to-back home games take in Leeds and then Forest on Monday night with Sabri Lamouchi's side also set to post Boro a stern test.

“I am really excited for Wednesday because there is no better game to bounce back in,” he told TeesideLive.

“We know it will be tough but we will be right up for it and we will be aiming to win, to do that and then to beat Forest as well.

“I am really looking forward to it and hopefully we can get the results we need to kick-start us again.”

Pressure has increased on Woodgate after the festive success that had calmed any worries of relegation.

But now the Middlesbrough native is under renewed scrutiny.

“Yes, he can turn this around, of course he can,” Shotton added.

“I bump into people in the street and they ask me if he is good enough, can he do it? Of course he can.

“He is the best manager I have had. Hands down. He is great with the lads, his man management is brilliant and his quality on the training ground is perfect.

“We just aren't showing that on the pitch. That’s what we have to turn around. It’s down to us.

“It’s just about us getting back to what we know. The Christmas period was great, maybe we were looking the wrong way at the play-offs when we were doing well during that period.

“But we still slipped back and now we have to go back to the drawing board.

"What did we do right in that run? We have Look at what we did and get back to that.”
