Middlesbrough sign Ireland international Aaron Connolly on loan

Republic of Ireland international Aaron Connolly has signed for Middlesbrough on loan.

The striker joins from Brighton after he struggled for game time over the season.

The Galwayman has made just one start for his parent club this season, playing an hour in a 1-0 defeat to Wolves last month, amid niggling injuries and poor form.

Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder says he will offer increased competition within his squad.

“I’m delighted. It’s an area of the pitch we need to improve in terms of competition for places," Wilder told the club website.

“He’s a young player, he’s played in the Premier League a number of times, and he’s from a technical football club. He’s also played for his country.

“He gives us pace, can finish at the top of the pitch and gives us competition for the players around him.”

Speaking earlier this week, Brighton manager Graham Potter said: “Aaron is at the stage where he needs to play football and, if we can find the right fit, then that will work for him and for us.

“There comes a point when you need to play, you need to let football do the talking.”

Connolly has represented the Republic of Ireland at all levels from Under-17 and has eight senior caps.
