Middlesbrough join Leeds United in race for £12m Liverpool winger also wanted by Rangers and Aston Villa but who flopped at Bristol City

Middlesbrough have joined the race for Ryan Kent.

The Northern Echo report that Jonathan Woodgate wants to build a younger team at the Riverside, and is eyeing up a loan move for the Liverpool winger.

Kent is hot property this summer following an impressive loan spell at Rangers last season, when he fully turned around the disappointing Bristol City form that saw the Robins fined for not playing him enough in the second half of 2017/18.

The Gers are keen to retake Kent on loan, but it is not currently clear whether Liverpool are willing to let him leave on a temporary basis again.

Leeds United are also interested, but are said to have made little progress in trying to take the player on loan.

With the Reds valuing Kent at £12m, the only club interested in the former Robin that could currently afford on a permanent basis him is Aston Villa.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has not ruled taking Kent back on loan but admitted it is currently out of his hands.

He said to the Express : "I suppose the fans will be desperate for a Kent update.

"But it’s a complicated one because he is Liverpool’s player and they aren’t back yet.

"I’m sure Jurgen will want to see Ryan and where he’s at. We’ll go from there and we’ll respect Liverpool.

"But I can assure the fans we’re doing everything we can to try to get Ryan back. The key thing that people need to understand is that Ryan has got to want this.

"It’s all right the fans wanting him, the staff wanting him, myself wanting him. But it’s Ryan’s decision.

"He’s got to want Rangers, he has got to want to come and be successful at Ibrox. That is the question Ryan has got to ask himself.

"At the moment, I’ve got to be careful about what I say about him because he’s not our player.

"We loved having him here and we would love the chance to have him again because we think he can improve at Rangers.

"But the reality is that we have to wait for Ryan to make a decision and Liverpool have to think Rangers is the right place to continue his development."
