Middlesbrough fire: Huge flames and 'explosions' as plumes of smoke seen across town

Explosions have been reportedly heard at a huge fire in Middlesbrough.

A plume of thick black smoke can be seen across the city as the blaze broke out behind Middlesbrough College, Middlehaven.

Students have shared images and videos with one eyewitness claiming to have heard a loud bang.

Another eyewitness said it sounds "like a firework display".

The Jap Euro North East Ltd scrapyard owner, Zafar Quyoom, said: "It’s my yard, it’s a garage that’s on fire.

"We had loads of calls from people telling us it was on fire. Someone’s been in a torched it.

"Every week we are chasing burglars from the site.

"Half of my yard is destroyed at the moment. There are about 10 fire engines here and police. All the roads are closed off."

A spokeswoman for Middlesborough College told Teeside Live: "We have no intention of evacuating the college building.

"The fire is contained in an area that is nowhere near the college and police and fire crews are dealing with it.

"There is no threat to the safety of our students."

Firefighters are at the scene.
