CRANSTON, R.I. _ Hope Highlands Middle School was on lockdown Monday morning after a bear was spotted on school grounds.
Ray Votto, chief operating officer, said the school went into lockdown as a precaution at 8:30 a.m. Everyone was inside at the time, and nobody encountered the bear, Votto said.
Votto said a bear-related school lockdown was unusual, and a first.
"And I've been here a long time," Votto said.
As of shortly before 9 a.m., the school was still in lockdown, and the bear was moving northwest, up toward the athletic complex, Votto said.
