Middle East and North Africa to see City of God release

Planned rerelease of 'City of God' marks its first theatrical outing in MENA region.

Front Row Filmed Entertainment, a prominent distributor based in Dubai, is set to kick off the international rerelease of the acclaimed Brazilian crime drama, 'City of God.' This marks the first time the 2002 film will be shown theatrically in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Front Row has partnered with Paris-based distributor, The Festival Agency, for the rerelease, having acquired the rights from Wild Bunch.

The decision to bring 'City of God' to the MENA region is significant, as it signifies Front Row's commitment to rereleasing classic and cult films in Saudi Arabia, particularly where these films have never been shown in theaters before. After lifting the 35-year-old ban on moviegoing in 2018, Saudi Arabia has emerged as the top theatrical market in the region.

Directed by Fernando Meirelles, 'City of God' is based on true events and follows the intertwining stories of a group of children growing up in the slums of Rio de Janeiro from the 1960s to the 1980s. The film delves into the harsh realities of drug trade and gang warfare in the city, earning critical acclaim and numerous accolades. In 2004, it received four Academy Award nominations, further solidifying its status as a cult classic.

Front Row's CEO, Gianluca Chakra, expressed his connection to the film, stating that it was the company's first acquisition. However, due to restrictions imposed by cinemas and budget limitations at the time, the film was only released on DVD. Now, with this rerelease, Chakra and his team intend to rectify the previous missed opportunity by bringing 'City of God' to the big screen in the MENA region.

The film will be released in MENA region theaters on February 22, with subsequent rereleases scheduled for the United Kingdom and Australia on February 23 and in Ireland on March 15. This international rerelease of 'City of God' promises to reintroduce the film to audiences around the world and provide an opportunity for new viewers to witness its gripping storytelling and captivating performances.

As Front Row kick-starts its plan to rerelease classics and cult films, this collaboration with The Festival Agency marks the first of many exciting ventures on the horizon. With the MENA region as its launching pad, Front Row aims to bring a diverse range of cinematic experiences to audiences who are hungry for unique and thought-provoking content. The inclusion of 'City of God' in this lineup is a testament to the enduring impact and relevance of this extraordinary film.

As the rerelease of 'City of God' takes flight, film enthusiasts in the MENA region, as well as in the UK, Australia, and Ireland, will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in this cinematic masterpiece once again. With its powerful storytelling, breathtaking visuals, and unforgettable characters, 'City of God' is poised to captivate and enthrall audiences worldwide.
