Mid Ulster councillor warns people with Covid-19 are being spotted in supermarkets 'carrying on as normal'

A Mid Ulster councillor has warned people with Covid-19 are being spotted in supermarkets "carrying on as normal as if nothing has changed".

Dan Kerr said he has been contacted by people who have seen relatives who have tested positive for the virus continuing to visit grocery stores.

He described the behaviour as "highly irresponsible" and urged the public to follow Covid-19 health advice on self-isolation as case numbers continue to surge.

The independent councillor told Belfast Live: "People have contacted me about family members who have tested positive. These people who have tested positive are carrying on as if nothing has changed.

"They're not adhering to the recommended health advice as if it's just a normal day, which is highly irresponsible.

"Relations of the people who tested positive had said they had seen their loved ones in supermarkets just carrying on as if it was normal, which they found very troublesome."

In the seven days up to January 3, the Mid Ulster council area recorded 1,389 coronavirus cases - more than treble the 447 in the previous week-long period.

People who test positive for coronavirus are told to self-isolate for at least 10 days from when symptoms began, according to Public Health Agency guidance.

Mr Kerr, from Stewartstown in Co Tyrone, who represents the Torrent area, urged people to self-isolate if they test positive for the virus or are waiting for a test result.

"I would be concerned that vulnerable people who don't know that a person has the virus will get the virus, and will be left seriously ill or dead as a consequence of this irresponsible behaviour," he added.
