PC gamers are set for a major upgrade which was originally designed for the Xbox in the next update - but only for those who use an Xbox controller to play.
Soon, when gamers long press the Xbox button on a controller, it will open Task View. The new feature entered preview testing with Windows 11 Build 2622.6682.
The idea of the move is to ensure Windows 11 works well for gamers who play using a controller, rather than a mouse and keyboard.
The changes will also mean that users no longer have to log in using a keyboard, and it can all be done direct from a controller.
Gaming experts have lined up to call the update “intriguing”.
Sean Endicott from Windows Central wrote in a recent blog post: “While the new handhelds are exciting pieces of hardware, I'd argue that the software powering the devices is more intriguing.
“Like some of the best gaming handhelds, Xbox Ally devices run Windows 11. Unlike other Windows-powered handhelds — at least for now — Xbox Ally devices have a "full screen" experience through the Xbox app.
“The revamped Xbox app does more than make games full screen. It stops several system components from running in the background, freeing up RAM and other resources.”
Senior Editor from the site Jez Corden added: “Microsoft has worked hard to catch up on that front, and the improved Xbox app will be one of the first recipients of those efforts.”
In the new updates, the Xbox Ally will have an Xbox button that opens a new task switcher when long-pressed.
Users will also be able log in with a gaming controller so that gamers will be able to remove the login altogether from their gaming PC, meaning they will no longer have to use a keyboard or mouse to log themselves in before grabbing a controller.
It is believed the new feature will improve security while still allowing gamers to use a controller exclusively.
Jez Cordon continued: “All of the additions should add up to a vastly improved gaming experience on Windows 11, especially for those using a controller.”
