Micro review: 'The Storyteller' by Dave Grohl

Highlights

Dave Grohl, renowned drummer from the rock band Nirvana, best known for his debut with the album ‘Never Mind’, ruled the international music scene during the 90s and then on. Later, he went on to collaborate with the finest names in the music industry and made an indelible mark in the world of music. 'The Storyteller' is his attempt to narrate the most enthralling snippets from his journey that turned him into the ‘rockstar’ that he is.

Born and brought up in the suburbs of Virginia, Grohl had been a hyperactive child, so much so that, in retrospect he highly suspects his younger self to be suffering from Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). His family was not perfect, for his parents were divorced and his father severed all ties with him after he dropped out of school to join a band. His journey with the first band that he joined forms a considerable portion of the book that describes his advent into the ‘rock-punk’ cosmos and how he ventured on to finally hear of Nirvana and their interest in having him. His camaraderie with the frontman, Kurt Cobain, and the grief that he goes through while witnessing Cobain’s addiction and eventual suicide takes the center stage in the tale of Nirvana and is followed by Foo Fighters’ debut album after his association with the band ends.

Replete with warmth, humor, adventure, heartbreak, and the joy of new beginnings, the book is a perfect read for those who wish to witness Grohl’s formative years that culminate in an unbreakable association with the world of rock and his journey post-Nirvana, which includes love, family, directing a docu-series and other remarkable milestones that he achieved.

How critics view the book:

Kitty Empire writes for The Guardian, “Grohl is so rock and roll that he falls off a stage and breaks his leg at a Foo Fighters gig in Sweden in 2015, goes to hospital and returns to finish the show.”

Tony Clayton-Lea writes for The Irish Times, "Strap yourself in for smooth, well-told tales".
