Micro review: 'The Man Who Died Twice' by Richard Osman

Highlights

After the huge success of his first crime novel, TV presenter and author Richard Osman is back with book two in the bestselling Thursday Murder Club series. Titled 'The Man Who Died Twice', the second installment in the new series is also a hit. While 'The Thursday Murder Club' introduced readers to Joyce, Elizabeth, Ron and Ibrahim as they solved a murder mystery, 'The Man Who Died Twice' takes you on a journey with them which involves stolen diamonds, mafia and spies.

Four senior citizens and friends - Joyce, Elizabeth, Ron and Ibrahim- living in retirement community in the British countryside are part of the Thursday Murder Club (TMC). Their diverse backgrounds help them solve mysteries, together-- Elizabeth Best is a former spy, Joyce Meadowcroft is a retired nurse, Ibrahim Arif was a psychiatrist, and Ron Ritchie was a political activist. Their friendship with the local police detectives– Donna and Chris, her boss- further helps them in solving cases. The plot thickens when Elizabeth receives a mysterious letter by her ex-husband Douglas Middlemiss, asking for her help. Douglas has stolen diamonds worth millions on an impulse from crooks and now his life is in danger. Meanwhile when a bunch of local goons steal Ibrahim's phone and attack him too, TMC members plot a revenge against them. But little do they know that the two problems-- the mafia after Douglas and the local goons-- are interconnected. And when Douglas and Poppy, his handler, are killed by the mafia, the TMC is racing against time to catch the murderers, find the mafia, prevent more killings, and find the stolen diamonds.

The story is full of smart surprises, humour and heart which makes 'The Man Who Died Twice' an entertaining read. The plot is filled with unexpected twists and the enchanting characters make it an interesting comic thriller. If you liked the first book in the series, then you should definitely add the second installment to your reading list. And here's some good news for fans of the Thursday Murder Club series-- book three is already available for pre-order!

How critics view the book:

The Times says, "This slick sequel will leave you buzzing".

Lynne Truss writes for The Guardian, "The Thursday Murder Club foursome return in a comic crime sequel alert to the realities of old age".

Kirkus Reviews writes, "A clever, funny mystery peopled with captivating characters that enhance the story at every quirky turn."
