Micro review: 'Deolali Days' by Parvati Menon

Highlights

Filmmaker Parvati Menon turned an author with her debut book 'Deolali Days', which was published in 2019. Set in pre-independent India, when the country was undergoing a massive socio-political change in the late 1940s, the book gives a glimpse of a bygone era to the readers.

The story is set in Deolali, a British Army camp near Bombay, in the 1940s. People of the town are fascinated by two handsome young men, fresh recruits who were to be trained by the protagonist's Dad. But like most Brits at that time, their aim was to migrate back to London. After all, it was a time of change and migration-- India was about to get independence from the British Raj bringing the Empire's rule to an end and so, the Brits were heading back leaving their luxurious life in India behind. A new country was being made for the Muslims to move to, and refugees were coming to India in hope of starting a new life from scratch. In the midst of this chaos, the young men don't rule out the possibility of matrimony with Col Brown's delightful daughters! Meanwhile, a charming yet strong and intimidating woman entrepreneur from a royal family decides to seize the opportunity of the moment. Adding to all this is the exceptionally correct predictions by a parrot named Poppat baba, who drives the heroes out of their wits. The chaos and drama that follow is what keep the readers hooked to know more.

Beautifully narrated with a delightful sense of humour, Parvati Menon's 'Deolali Days' is an entertaining read. The well-developed characters from diverse backgrounds make it all the more interesting. 'Deolali Days' takes the readers back in time to a pre-independent India, giving a rare glimpse of an era gone by.
