Micro-containment zones in Bengaluru up by 85% this month

BENGALURU: There were 51 active Covid-19 micro-containment zones in Bengaluru on December 1 but it touched 95 on Tuesday.

Though the Palike did not discontinue the concept of identifying micro-containment zones after the second wave, the number had gone down for a bit until the first week of December.

There were only 70 microcontainment zones in the city at the end of October and it further decreased to 61 by November-end.

BBMP chief commissioner Gaurav Gupta said: “Declaring the micro-containment zones was never discontinued. When a minimum of three cases is detected in a residential unit, it is called a micro-containment zone.” The purpose is to contain further spread of the virus into a cluster. More than one micro-containment zone is constituted as a cluster.

Bommanahalli zone, since October, has consistently had the highest number of microcontainment zones in the city followed by either south or east zones.

As on December 28, Bommanahalli zone had 26 such zones, followed by Mahadevapura and south zone with 18 and 15 zones, respectively.

Trilok Chandra, BBMP special commissioner, health, said the number of apartments in Bommanahalli and Mahadevapura are high, so is the number of zones.

“The number of active zones in the city had gone beyond 100 in about 10 to 12 days ago. As of now, the number has dipped a little. There can be many possible reasons, including not being fully vaccinated, travel, not following Covid-appropriate behaviour and so on. We urge citizens not to let their guard down. Always wear masks and follow norms,” he said.

None of these zones has Omicron cases as those infected by the new variant are hospitalised. “Even the primary contacts of those who have tested positive for the Omicron variant are in institutional quarantine until they get their reports. If the results are negative, they will be expected to remain under home isolation for another seven days before they are tested again,” Gupta said.
