Micky Mellon set to leave Dundee United after one season in 'amicable split' following safe Premiership return

Micky Mellon is set to step down as Dundee United manager.

The club and their boss are currently in talks and are close to an amicable and mutual parting.

News has started to leak around the club's staff about Mellon’s imminent departure.

Mellon was appointed United manager last July, after he was headhunted from Tranmere Rovers following Robbie Neilson's departure to Hearts.

The 49-year-old kept newly-promoted United in the Premiership and led them to the Scottish Cup semi-finals.

The former Fleetwood and Shrewsbury manager is unlikely to be short of options.

Mellon, who has a year left on his contract, also introduced a number of academy graduates into the United first-team.

A lot of the United faithful were unhappy with the defensive approach Mellon took as he looked to keep his team in the top-flight.

He did become more expansive as his team grew into his style but there were still major doubts amongst a lot of the Tannadice fan base.
