Micky Mellon blasts back at Richard Foster after pundit's controversial comments on Dundee United goalkeeper

Dundee United are furious with Richard Foster’s TV attack.

The Partick Thistle defender was BBC television’s summariser on Friday night for United’s Scottish Cup win at Forfar Athletic.

He appeared to controversially question how badly injured Benjamin Siegrist was, after he had pulled out at Forfar in the warm-up.

The Swiss keeper has been sent for a scan and will also miss Wednesday night’s Premiership clash with Kilmarnock.

Mellon stated: “I heard about Richard Foster’s comments and I know Benjy is upset about them.

“Only Richard will be able to explain what he meant by it but I know I’ve got a good, honest pro disappointed by the comments.

“You would have to ask Richard and the BBC about it.

“Would I expect him to get an apology? I don’t know, that’s for the BBC and Richard because we don’t want to make too much of it.

“I have to say on behalf of my keeper, who has enormous integrity, that he was very disappointed to hear those comments from a fellow pro.

“You’d need to ask him why he said it, but generally people think it was a strange thing to say.

“Benjy’s a great big fella, he’s been brilliant for us.”

Foster speaking on BBC Television on Friday evening had controversially said: “I know it might sound horrible but I hope he has broken his wrist or his hand, otherwise strap it up and go out there and play.

“He didn’t look like he was in too much distress there.

“He looked like he had a wee sore wrist and came off.

“He has been excellent but I am not convinced there, watching that.”

There is still swelling in Siegrist’s hand.

“Benjy hasn’t broken his wrist but he’s going to have to go for a scan because it’s still very swollen and he’s in a lot of pain,” the United boss confirmed.

“He won’t play on Wednesday, he has no chance.

“It’s a bit more mobile but there is a lot of swelling on it so we have to take it a day at a time.”

Deniz Mehmet deputised in Angus and will keep the gloves for the trip to Rugby Park.

Mellon admitted: “Deniz came in, he’s a good goalkeeper and replaced Benji seamlessly.

“We are blessed with two very good goalkeepers. We’re a bit short now obviously but we’ll see how that goes.”

United have got a weekend Scottish Cup tie with Aberdeen to look forward to but Mellon has claimed the full focus will be the league and trying to finish top of the bottom half.

Mellon claimed: “We will not in any way do anything that will go against the integrity of the league.

“We know how important the result is for everyone concerned in it.

“So we’ll be putting out a team we think is capable of getting us a result down there.

“I’ll be expecting them to try to get the three points, it’s important to say that.

“We have a squad of boys here I can trust and I can assure everyone I’ll be putting out a team I believe can get the three points.”

United head to Rugby Park for the third time. It is also United’s third consecutive game on artificial grass, after trips to Hamilton and Forfar.

Mellon joked: “It will be nice to get back on grass eventually but we are certainly getting used to the different types of Astroturf.

“We have been trying them all out lately but we’re just cracking on and looking forward to it.

“It will be a good game, a tough game because Kilmarnock, like us, will be fighting very hard for the points.”
