Micky Mellon back in hotseat at Tranmere Rovers less than a year after leaving

Micky Mellon has been named Tranmere Rovers' new manager - less than a year after he first departed the club.

Mellon spent almost four years in charge of Rovers from 2016 to 2020, but his first spell ended on a sour note.

The club were relegated into League Two last season, via the controversial points-per-game (PPG) method. The Covid-19 pandemic meant the third and fourth tiers were halted early.

The PPG method meant Rovers slipped into the dropzone and as a result went down, despite having a game in hand on their rivals.

Mellon had a year to run on his deal but was poached by Dundee United last summer.

He guided them to a ninth-placed finish in their first season back in the Scottish Premiership but left by mutual consent last week.

Now, Tranmere have moved quickly to re-hire the 49-year-old following Keith Hill's sacking earlier this month.

"It is great to be back," Mellon told Rovers' website.

"When I went to Scotland following our demotion from League One, it left a sense of unfinished business and I am pleased to have the opportunity to right that wrong.

"Tranmere is a forward-thinking club with an exciting future, and I wanted to be part of that, so I can’t wait to get started and be reunited with the SWA once again.”

Chairman Mark Palios said: "In Micky, we have a proven manager who already has a bond with the SWA, having guided us to back-to-back promotions from the National League to League One.

"I am very confident that with his knowledge and experience, and with Ian Dawes and Andy Parkinson alongside him, we will be making a strong push for promotion next season.”

Hill was given the chop just days before Tranmere's League Two play-off campaign which saw them lose out to Morecambe 3-2 on aggregate in the semi-finals.
