Mickey Loomis hinted at the Tyrann Mathieu signing in post-draft presser

Saturday night following the final rounds of the NFL draft, New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis told media there was one remaining “must” to address. He also insinuated that the must wouldn’t be hard to figure out. “You guys can guess that,” Loomis responded when asked for more detail. “You probably know it already.” We did. It was safety.

After not addressing safety in the draft, it was clear this was the area the Saints would want to focus on moving forward. And now, they have. The Saints have closed a deal to bring veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu home to New Orleans.

Mathieu will wait until the compensatory free agency period has closed before officially inking his deal. While the Saints are currently not in line for any comp picks in 2023, Mathieu probably doesn’t mind not doing the Kansas City Chiefs any favors this offseason. The Chiefs didn’t offer Mathieu a new contract, a decision that left the three-time All-Pro “heartbroken.”

Now, he’ll get the chance to continue his playing days in his hometown of New Orleans. This is a huge win for the Saints. not only did they address the safety position, but they land a player that fans have been canvasing to sign for years. Now, it’s a reality. And if you paid attention post-draft, you might have already known it was on the way.
