Mickey Callaway, the disgraced ex-Mets manager who is banned from MLB through at least 2022, has a new job. The Acereros de Monclova, a team in the Mexican Baseball League, has hired Callaway to manage its winter league team, the team said on its website.
In April, the Angels fired Callaway as their pitching coach and MLB put him on its ineligible list, with permission to apply to be taken off after the 2022 season. He was exiled after a lengthy official investigation into reports that he sexually harassed reporters who covered his teams.
Callaway badgered women in media for nude photos and offered them inside information if they would drink alcohol with him, The Athletic reported in February.
Sandy Alderson, now and then the Mets’ president, hired Callaway to manage the Mets, which he ultimately did for two seasons.
Several disgraced former MLB players, including some who have served domestic violence suspensions, have continued their careers in the Mexican League. Addison Russell was the starting shortstop this past season for the Acereros, the team that hired Callaway. Russell was suspended 40 games in 2019 after his ex-wife said he was physically abusive.
Joining Callaway on the winter ball staff will be Dave Stewart, who has been the Acereros’ pitching coach for several years. Stewart boycotted a Dodgers celebration earlier this year over the team’s slow handling of the Trevor Bauer rape and abuse allegations.
