Mick Wallace takes in Euro 2020 games in Rome and Bucharest as he vows football only works with supporters

MEP Mick Wallace was among the spectators at two Euro 2020 games over the weekend as he vowed 'football only works with supporters'.

The politician and former property developer took in Italy's 3-0 win over Turkey on Friday night in Rome before attending Austria's 3-1 victory over North Macedonia on Sunday.

Wallace, an avid football fan and former Wexford Youths manager, shared a number of photos from both games on social media as he mixed with fans in the two cities.

He posted after Italy's win: "A beautiful night to be in Roma - Love how the pundits never rate #Italia who've been in 4 World Cup finals since I started following football..."

Wallace has long been an advocate for Palestine and revealed why he was supporting North Macedonia ahead of Sunday's game.

He explained: "When the Apartheid State of #Israel who has zero respect for International law, was murdering women + children in their homes in #Gaza, the #Austrian Government flew the Israeli flag over Government buildings in Vienna - Good luck to the underdog #Macedonia tonight..."

He added prior to the match:"#northmacedonia come to Bucharest - I just love live football - Which really only works with the supporters..."

Wallace went viral a number of years ago after he made a speech in the Dail, when he was a TD, wearing a Torino top.

Explaining his decision to wear the Italian club's shirt at the time, he said: “For the record, I am a Toro supporter. I have a season ticket with Torino and I stand on the second tier of the curva nord."

Wallace added: “I became very attached to the Toro club mostly because of their fans- I find them to be socially minded and for me, the Toro fans are the heart and soul of the city of Torino, a city I love very much.”
