Mick Rock nominated to become the next GAA president by Roscommon

Roscommon have nominated Mick Rock to become the next GAA president.

The Elphin clubman is the second person to officially join the race to succeed John Horan after Cork’s Jerry O’Sullivan declared his intention to run earlier this year.

Horan’s successor will be elected at GAA Congress next February and will take office 12 months later.

Rock is a retired school teacher and is currently chairman of the GAA’s national club committee. Previously, he was Connacht Council chairman and served on the GAA’s management committee and Central Council.

He is bidding to become the first president from Connacht since the late Joe McDonagh’s term ended in 2000.

It is expected that more candidates will join in the race in the coming weeks and months with former Armagh footballer Jarlath Burns having stated his ambition to run for the office at some stage, though whether he will take the plunge this time around remains to be seen.
