Mick Quinn

Mick Quinn believes Newcastle have found a top player but will they sign him?

When it comes to signings, you've got to judge the individual on its merits. Salomon Rondon has been involved in 43% of Newcastle's goals this season - scoring or assisting - and you have to judge him on the influence he's having on the team and it's a massive influence.

When Newcastle signed him, I said what he would be like. He would get up to a dozen goals, he'll assist a few as well but, more importantly, he's that big battering ram up front who can hold the ball up as well for a flick-on to Ayoze Perez or Miguel Almiron .

He's a top player to hold the ball up and I think Newcastle have the right blend doing it like that. I still think we need a centre forward for next season in case he does go and because we need competition for places but he's been instrumental this season.

I called it earlier this season - sometimes he's too unselfish down the channels and chasing back but that's what the fans love. Newcastle fans, especially, love effort and he's definitely a player who gives them that and that's why the fans have warmed to him.

You have that blend of youth and experience. It shifted too much to one side when I was at Newcastle because Ossie Ardiles, when he came in, moved on the experienced players like Mark McGhee and Roy Aitken.

There was only me and Benny Kristensen really as the experienced players there. Benny got injured, I got injured, and then we were relying on all the kids.

They were top players but they needed experience to get over the line because we were drawing 2-2 and getting beat 5-4 and we weren't picking up too many points.

We were a joy to watch, football wise, but sadly we weren't picking up points and they panicked and Kevin Keegan was available.

We have got a good balance in the team - it's just a bit of fine tuning. Get Rafa's signature, give him a bit of war chest and sign a couple of top quality players and we're away. That would be my wish list for next season.
