Mick Newell says privacy rules left Nottinghamshire hands tied in Alex Hales case

Mick Newell feels Nottinghamshire handled the release of information related to Alex Hales' suspension in the best way they could.

Hales has just completed a 21-day ban for an off-field incident with Notts initially saying he was taking a break for 'personal reasons'.

England and Wales Cricket board rules entitled Hales to certain levels of privacy and Newell admits that tied the club's hands to an extent.

The ECB have come under fire for their handling of the matter with director of cricket Newell insisting Notts did not try to play down or suppress the story at their end.

Mick Newell admits he feels sorry for Alex Hales as he leaves door open for long future at Nottinghamshire

"No, we weren't trying to keep it quiet. What we said attracted more questions because there was a vacuum of information," he said.

"We were having to say 'no comment' to people. I don't like that, but the policy dictated that.

"It's been difficult for the club. We've had to deal with it internally and hopefully quietly, while at the same time realising the cricketing media are keeping a close eye on what has been a huge story.

"The way we handled it was pretty much dictated by the rules and regulations. There's an element of privacy that has to be respected and we've abided by that.

England captain Eoin Morgan blasts Nottinghamshire's Alex Hales after World Cup axe

"High profile cases like this will lead to the PCA (Professional Cricketers Association), the counties and the ECB looking at the rules and regs. Issues will arise when a high profile player is suspended.

"People will look at the rules and ask have we got this right?"

It is understood the coaching staff and players were all initially unaware of the true reason for Hales' absence.

Newell admits he was "restricted to a large extent" in what he could tell head coach Peter Moores, his staff and the players.
