Mick McCarthy won't be chasing Patrick Bamford - but leaves door open for Troy Parrott

Mick McCarthy insists he won't spend his summer chasing Patrick Bamford - but will leave the door open for Troy Parrott.

And Huddersfield striker Karlan Grant is another who could land on McCarthy's radar after the summer break.

The Ireland boss needs to beef up his attack after seeing his goal-shy strikers draw a blank in his four games since returning to the hot-seat.

McCarthy asked Bamford to declare for Ireland earlier this year but the Leeds United forward put a decision on the long finger.

Last night, McCarthy revealed he is fed up trying to get an answer and insists it's now down to the player who scored 10 goals in 25 appearances this season.

Asked if Bamford could be in the frame for the Euro qualifier again Switzerland game in September, McCarthy said in Limerick: "If he rings me and wants to play, yes.

"But no, I’m not (going to chase him).”

McCarthy continued: "Let me ask you a question. If you’re an Irish player and you thought you were good enough to play for Ireland, what would you do?

"Would you pick the phone up? That will do for me.

“I'm not chasing any more. It was left on the back burner and it’s up to Patrick. If he wants to play, he's got to (pick up the phone)."

Former English underage international Grant could yet be considered by McCarthy, although the Ireland boss said yesterday he was not currently in the frame.

The forward scored four Premier League goals for Huddersfield after joining the relegated side from Charlton in January.

Grant scored against Arsenal and Watford and bagged a brace against West Ham.

McCarthy is also hoping that Tottenham striker Parrott is back in the groove by then.

Fitness permitting, he should be in the Ireland mix for the Under-19 Euro finals in Armenia next month.

McCarthy said: “I've only had reports on him because he’s been injured but I'd love to see him playing. "He looks really good. Yes, I'd like to see him. Would I give him a chance if he's good enough? Of course I would.”
