Mick McCarthy: 'We'll be playing our usual brand even though some people find it unpleasant'

Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy has told Yann Sommer to shove it ahead of tonight’s Euro 2020 clash in Dublin.

The Switzerland goalkeeper labelled Ireland ‘an unpleasant’ team to play against, but that is music to McCarthy’s ears as the Boys in Green look for a win that would put them in pole position to qualify.

At the halfway stage in qualifying, Ireland sit top of Group D on 10 points but having already played minnows Gibraltar twice, their toughest tests are to come.

McCarthy said: “I hope he’s sat in the dressing room afterwards and he’s thinking it’s more unpleasant, and he doesn’t want to see us in October.

“We won’t be changing the way we play. We’ll be playing our usual brand even though some people find it unpleasant.

“I thought we played quite pleasantly over last four games, to be honest. And I seem to think we’ve done alright when we’ve qualified for competitions.”

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and McCarthy said: “That’s just part of the game, it’s part of the Premier League.

“The most aggressive teams in the Premier League are Manchester City and Liverpool, in terms of high press.

“You try and get through that and they’ll take you down. That’s aggressive. The fact they’ve got £500 millions of full-backs in their teams help.

“They’re the most aggressive teams in the League, without a doubt.

“And I’ve watched Switzerland by the way and there’s no shortage of aggression from them in how they work and how they press.”

McCarthy added: “I’m not really worried. If we win 1-0 and it’s ugly, or not pleasant, I’ll be fine with it. You know that.”
