Mick McCarthy under fire as Cardiff fans furious after 4-0 loss to West Brom

Pressure continues to mount on Mick McCarthy after his Cardiff City were thrashed 4-0 by West Brom on Tuesday night.

Karlan Grant’s early effort, a Curtis Nelson own goal, an Alex Mowatt screamer and Matt Phillips’ icing on the cake extended the visitors’ unbeaten start and underlined the gulf between the two sides.

This was Cardiff’s sixth defeat in seven games in all competitions and, coming after Saturday’s 5-1 defeat at Blackburn, McCarthy had to endure chants of ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’ from both sets of supporters.

West Brom had not won in the Welsh capital since October 1974, but that 47-year wait came to an end as Albion leapfrogged inactive Bournemouth at the top of the table.

McCarthy, who has seen his side concede nine goals in two games, said: “People singing that at me… the away fans, that doesn’t bother me one bit.

“When the home fans start doing it, that’s a different ball game all together.

“I fully understand the fans and I have no complaints about them at all. I share their frustrations and I can’t say we don’t deserve it.

“We need a result and fast to get some momentum back quickly. I’m not taking any comfort in anything at the moment.

“I want to turn it around and make sure we do better. We will carry on and working as hard as we can to do that.”

Cardiff fans also took to social media to vent their frustration with McCarthy.

One said: "I've never been so embarrassed watching a Cardiff team play , worst football I've seen in 30 odd years with half the team on the pitch being centre backs, this side is in serious danger of getting relegated under Mick McCarthy."

Another commented: "If Mick McCarthy is still manager by the end of the week I honestly worry about Cardiff."

Someone else added: "Didn't go tonight, couldn't face it. Don't want to sound wise after the event, but we all knew it was coming, didn't we? Can't see how Mick McCarthy can survive. Neanderthal, grim football has had its day & the Cardiff board must act."
