Mick McCarthy to watch Ireland hopefuls in League Cup clash

Mick McCarthy is planning to run the rule over Ireland hopefuls Danny Crowley and Marcus Harness tonight.

The Republic of Ireland boss will be at the League Cup clash between Portsmouth and Birmingham City.

McCarthy went to Holland in May to watch Crowley play in the Dutch Cup final for Willem II.

But despite featuring regularly that season, the midfielder was a substitute and McCarthy had left before he came on.

Harness, who plays wide, is English born but told McCarthy last month that he wants to declare for Ireland.

“I’m hoping to see three players involved in Ronan Curtis, Marcus Harness and Danny Crowley,” said McCarthy yesterday.

“Danny was watched by Terry Connor at Brentford on Saturday and Terry told me he was encouraged by what he saw.

“The game proved that Danny has that forward thinking mentality - he can see a pass and he can execute it.

“He played as the left-sided offensive midfielder in a 4-5-1 formation and hopefully I’ll get to see him play tonight, depending on what team Birmingham pick.

“It’s a good start for him in the Championship but there’s a long season ahead for everyone in that league.

“Marcus and Ronan both started for Portsmouth at Shrewsbury on Saturday and I’d like to see both of them involved as well.”

On Saturday, McCarthy will be at Bournemouth’s Premier League clash with Sheffield United, who now have four Irish internationals in their squad.
