Mick McCarthy to Celtic 'red herring' but Cardiff City boss is in demand

Cardiff City chairman Mehmet Dalman has played down Mick McCarthy's links to the Celtic job.

Some reports suggested that McCarthy was on the shortlist of candidates to replace Neil Lennon, but the former Ireland boss has penned a new deal with the Bluebirds.

Dalman has confirmed one club did reach out regarding the former Ireland boss, who has impressed since taking over in the Championship, but says it was not Celtic.

Interim boss John Kennedy remains the favourite with bookmakers to become permanent manager ahead of the Premiership clash with Dundee United.

The Cardiff chief claimed to Wales Online that the link was a "red herring" with more clubs monitoring McCarthy's situation.

Dalman said: "I've had one football club, not Celtic, ring me up to make a polite enquiry about Mick.

"I con't say which one, it's confidential and wouldn't be fair on them. It happened 10 days ago and, to be honest, I found it quite refreshing that they acted in such a real gentlemanly way in today's football by doing things correctly.

"I'm not sure if we can call it an official approach or not, do you say that when they ring for a chat about Mick's situation this summer?

"But it's nice to know the work our manager is doing is being noticed elsewhere.

"I had absolutely no hesitation in telling them it has always been our intention to keep Mick beyond the summer and that's what we have done.

"We always wanted him to stay, although he didn't need to convince us - he's already done that with results on the pitch anyway."
