Mick McCarthy signs two-year deal with Cardiff City after remarkable start as manager

Mick McCarthy has signed a two-year deal with Cardiff City after turning their fortunes around in just ten matches.

The former Ireland boss, who will take charge of his 1,000th game in management this Friday, was appointed until the end of the season after Neil Harris left the club in January.

And after leading the Bluebirds up the Championship table with seven wins and three draws, the 62-year-old and his assistant, Terry Connor, have been rewarded with an extended stay in the Welsh capital, Wales Online reports.

Speaking to the club website on Thursday, McCarthy said: “TC and I have enjoyed every minute of the time we’ve had at this great club so far and we’re delighted to be staying. I’d like to thank Vincent for offering us the opportunity to do that.

“The players have responded to us over these past ten games in the manner we hoped they would, and it’s a pleasure working with them each day in training.

"Credit to them for the efforts they’ve put in so far and the results they’ve earned. They’re enjoying it and deservedly so. I’m very much looking forward to the future.”

The turnaround in fortunes under McCarthy has been scarcely believable and is sure to have delighted the club's hierarchy.

When he took over, the Bluebirds sat in 15th. Over 40 days and they're now in the hunt for a play-off spot.

Even in a short space of time, the remarkable job he has done in Cardiff has not gone unnoticed, with Scottish giants Celtic linked with the former Republic of Ireland boss after they sacked Neil Lennon.

However, his future is now firmly in south Wales.

“Mick and Terry have done a fantastic job over these past two months and I’m thrilled that they will be staying with us longer term," said Cardiff's owner Vincent Tan.

“Mick is an experienced and respected manager whose work ethic, discipline and honesty I respect and admire. I am confident that he is the right man for our club and the right man to take us forward.

“I’m sure that our supporters are enjoying what they’re seeing from their team again and will echo my sentiments and sincerest best wishes to Mick and Terry.”
