Mick McCarthy's Marley Watkins transfer declaration and how it impacts Cardiff City ace targeted by Fleetwood and Rotherham

Mick McCarthy has confirmed that Marley Watkins will be let go at the end of his contract this month.

The Bluebirds signed the one-cap Wales international on a contract until the end of August, a deal McCarthy described as a trial period.

The forward scored twice on his competitive debut for City in the 3-2 Carabao Cup win over League Two outfit Sutton United and the manager said it had done the player's chances of earning a longer deal "no harm".

But, after a week of consideration, it has been decided that Watkins will not stay on in the Welsh capital, which could open doors for others.

Mark Harris was linked with loan moves to both Rotherham and Fleetwood at the weekend, but in light of the decision to allow Watkins to leave, it looks as though the Bluebirds academy product will be staying put.

"We talked about it, we considered it," McCarthy said about Harris potentially leaving on loan.

"Whether he would benefit from being a sub here, certainly training everyday with us benefits him.

"But I've decided Marley Watkins won't be staying with us and we will be using our youngsters.

"Mark Harris, Rubin Colwill, Chanka Zimba if he gets there, Isaak Davies when he gets back and the lads we have got here. And I'm happy with them."

One of those forwards, of course, is Kieffer Moore. He made another appearance off the bench at Weston Homes Stadium when many thought he might start.

McCarthy has confirmed that, now, he believes he is ready to go from the off and, therefore, it would be surprising if he is omitted from the starting lineup for the visit of Millwall this Saturday.

"Kieffer played against Sutton and it looked quite clear he wasn't to be starting," McCarthy said after the Peterborough win.

"He made a cameo on Saturday, scored a goal from Gilo's (Ryan Giles) wonderful cross.

"He's ready to start now I would say. He has had more training and more minutes on the pitch.

"There's no other reason other than that he has been away with the Welsh squad and having Covid, the same with Rubin."
