Mick McCarthy poses with Gardai after Ireland team bus breaks down on way to Gibraltar clash

The Republic of Ireland team were hit with a big inconvenience yesterday evening on their way to the Aviva Stadium for their Euro 2020 qualifying clash with Gibraltar - but Mick McCarthy wasn't one bit fussed.

The team bus was forced to pull over on the Navan Road after a mechanical fault meant that it could only crawl into Dublin from Abbotstown at just 20 kph.

And the team had to switch buses after a short layover to complete their trip to the Lansdowne Road stadium, with McCarthy even taking the chance to pose with two Gardai on the side of the road.

Speaking after the game, McCarthy claimed that the stop did not affect his team and joked that a woman with a pram even overtook the faltering bus.

He said: McCarthy said: “It could only go 20kph and a woman pushing a pram went past us at one stage. But did it affect us? Did it heck.

“Gibraltar had to come here from Georgia. We came from Castleknock! No excuses at all. Machinery breaks down. I had some lovely pictures taken with the police.”

A first half own goal from a David McGoldrick strike as well as a late Robbie Brady header seen Ireland top of their qualifying group after four games, taking ten from a possible twelve points as McCarthy remains unbeaten in his second coming as manager.
