Mick McCarthy given Cardiff City job until end of the season

Mick McCarthy has been tasked with rescuing Cardiff City's season after being named their new boss tonight.

The former Republic of Ireland boss has been handed a contract until the end of the season at the Championship club.

It marks a quick return to management for the 61-year-old who was sacked by Cypriot side APOEL earlier this month.

McCarthy takes over from Neill Harris after a run of six straight defeats saw him shown the door.

"I'm delighted to be here," McCarthy said. "I'm thrilled by the opportunity.

"I want to get the club back to winning games and I want to get smiles back on the players' faces. If we do that, then we'll get smiles back on the fans.

"We've got a good squad of players and I'm looking forward to getting down to work."

McCarthy, who has led both Sunderland and Wolves to Championship titles, will be joined in the dugout by his trusty assistant manager Terry Connor.

The pair take over a team currently in 15th place in the Championship and 13 points off the play-off places.

Club owner Vincent Tan said of the appointment: "I’d like to personally welcome Mick and Terry to our Football Club and wish them the very best of luck.

"I’ve enjoyed the brief talk I’ve had with Mick and I’m confident that he’s the right man to take on the responsibility of improving our performances and fortunes."
