Michy Batshuayi signs new Chelsea FC contract, loaned to Besiktas

Michy Batshuayi has signed a new Chelsea contract extension before joining Besiktas on loan for the rest of the 2021/22 season.

Batshuayi has put pen to paper on a new deal to keep him at Chelsea until 2023. The Belgian has struggled to become a regular at Stamford Bridge since joining the Blues from Marseille in 2016, scoring 25 goals in 77 appearances.

The striker has already spent loan spells at Borussia Dortmund, Valencia and Crystal Palace, and will now join a fourth team on a temporary basis since joining Chelsea.

A club statement read: “Michy Batshuayi has today extended his contract at Chelsea until 2023 and joined Besiktas on loan for the season.

“The Belgian forward heads to Vodafone Park – the venue of our 2019 Super Cup clash with Liverpool - for the remainder of this season, after passing a medical in Istanbul and signing the relevant paperwork.”

Batshuayi’s previous contract had been due to expire at the end of the current season, so the new deal and loan both protects the striker’s value to Chelsea while also offering him first-team football - and potentially the chance to impress suitors ahead of a transfer next summer.

Competition for games as a Chelsea attacker is fierce: Romelu Lukaku recently arrived for a club-record £97.5million fee, while Tammy Abraham - ahead of Batshuayi in the pecking order - was sold to AS Roma after being frozen out by Thomas Tuchel.
