Michigan (6-2) vs. Maryland (3-5) Game Preview

Why Michigan Will Win

Now the team seems to have found its offense.

Call it an attitude adjustment, or call it simply jelling, but Michigan was a whole new team in the second half against Penn State, and it came out with one of the best performances yet under Jim Harbaugh in the blowout win over Notre Dame.

Maryland is going the other way.

It should be right about now when the Terps start to kick it all in and have the offense working, Instead, it’s coming off yet another embarrassing performance, failing to make the trip to Minnesota in a 52-10 loss that wasn’t even that close.

The biggest culprit? Maryland’s secondary can’t stop anyone’s passing attack.

It’s not like it’s facing a slew of Big 12 passing games that open it up. Teams are connecting on big plays, midrange throws, and everything in between. The D got a brief respite against the Gophers, partly because they spent so much time running the ball.

Michigan’s offensive line blasted away for over 300 yards against the Irish, but expect the downfield passing game to work, too.

Why Maryland Will Win

It’s the possible letdown of all letdown games for the Wolverines.

They’re coming off the emotional dates against Penn State and Notre Dame, and they get two weeks off after this before dealing with Michigan State. As good as the offense has been, it’s not above giving the ball away and being wildly inconsistent.

Yes, the Wolverine O has been fantastic for the last six quarters, but this production is a relatively new thing.

Last week was when Terp QB Josh Jackson was supposed to be ready to roll coming off an ankle injury, but he wasn’t. This week he’s getting the first team reps, the backfield should be in place, and the hope has to be to catch lightning in a bottle against the gassed Wolverines.

The Terp D can get behind the line, the O can open it up, and now it has a big chance to make a massive statement at home. Maryland was a disaster when Penn State showed up, but it pushed Indiana hard in a loss in College Park two weeks ago.

What’s Going To Happen

Expect Michigan to be a wee bit flat, and expect it not to matter.

The defense will give up a few early scores, but the offense will get the ground game in a lather early on to set up a whole slew of big plays down the field. The Wolverine receivers will go off in the third quarter to end the drama.
