Michigan surpasses 27,000 coronavirus cases; death toll now at 1,768

DETROIT _ There were 1,366 new cases of coronavirus reported Tuesday in Michigan, bringing the state's total to 27,001 cases.

The state's death toll climbed to 1,768 with 166 more reported as of 10 a.m., the second-most fatalities since the pandemic began. Only April 10, with 205 deaths, was worse.

The daily cases were the most in Michigan since 1,367 were reported April 8.

Detroit's total climbed to more than 7,000 confirmed cases (7,004) and 400 deaths (427). That is an increase of 223 new cases reported and 32 more fatalities.

Of the reported cases statewide as of Friday, the state has reported 433 people have recovered from COVID-19.

Tuesday's numbers are both up from 997 confirmed new cases and 115 deaths Monday.

Women make up 54% of all cases, while 57% of those who have died are men. While black residents have tested positive at a higher rate than whites (33% to 27%), the mortality rate for both races is 39%. However, the race of 31% of cases and 17% of deaths is unknown.

The average age of death is 73.3 years old, with 93% of deaths among those between the ages of 50 and older. Those between 50-59 make up 20% of all positive tests, with individuals 60-69 next at 18%.
