Michigan State vs. Wisconsin: Three Things To Watch

Michigan State faces the Wisconsin Badgers this week. The Badgers are undefeated so far with a 5-0 record. On the other hand, the Spartans are 4-2 on the year. Wisconsin is a formidable opponent and they will test Michigan State. Here are three things to watch in this game:

Michigan State’s RB Depth

Last week, RB Connor Heyward entered the transfer portal. This week, RB La’Darius Jefferson followed suit. This is not the end of the world, but, it is not good. Especially considering RB Elijah Collins left the Ohio State game holding his hamstring. Michigan State’s RB depth is questionable at best.

Collins is still the number one option against Wisconsin. The question is, who comes after him? Freshman Anthony Williams will likely see some snaps this Saturday. Brandon Wright, another freshman, may get snaps as well. Either way, the Spartans only have freshman options at RB and they are facing off against a premier defense. Michigan State’s RB situation is going to play a huge role in this game.

Jonathan Taylor

I recently said Jonathan Taylor is an animal. I take that back. Jonathan Taylor is the Terminator. He is built like a tank and can absolutely scoot. Taylor has 12 touchdowns on the year. Most importantly, he has scored on every opening drive for Wisconsin. Every single opening drive. Last week, J.K. Dobbins gave the Spartan’s defense fits. Hopefully, Michigan State can contain Jonathan Taylor. If not, it could get ugly, trust me.

Playcalling

The playcalling last week was tough to watch. From the constant Run-Pass Option plays to the late game Wildcat formation. Michigan State must call better plays. Especially given their suspect running game. The Spartans must rely on crafty playcalling to succeed.

Brian Lewerke played really well last week. He deserved more opportunities to throw deep down the field. There are plenty of fans unhappy with Lewerke but he is not the issue. As a matter of fact, Spartan WRs dropped plenty of passes against Ohio State. Lewerke should throw the ball deep often against Wisconsin. Look for Michigan State’s offensive playcalling to dictate this game.
