Michigan State (1-0) vs. Western Michigan (1-0) Game Preview
Why Western Michigan Will Win
Michigan State has a funky way of keeping both teams in the game.
The 28-7 win over Tulsa didn’t have any real drama – the defense made sure of that – but the running game didn’t work, and the offense couldn’t do much of anything in the second half.
Yeah, the O is going be better and stronger than it was last season, but it didn’t exactly go off against the Golden Hurricane.
Western Michigan has just enough on defense to keep the Spartan offense from doing a whole lot more than it did last week, and the offense has its guy back. With QB Jon Wassink returning after missing time last season hurt, he was razor-sharp completing 20-of-25 passes for 368 yards and five scores, averaging a whopping 18.4 yards per completion.
MSU’s defense is amazing, but it’s going to get stretched. However …
Why Michigan State Will Win
WMU isn’t going to run a lick.
Wassink is too good not to let him keep throwing, but it would be nice if there was a little bit of a ground attack to rely on – it won’t be there.
The Broncos couldn’t find any room to move in the 48-13 win over Monmouth – coming up with just 90 yards and averaging fewer than three yards per pop – and they’re not going to find their ground attack all of a sudden against this D.
Michigan State spent most of last Friday night in the Tulsa backfield with six sacks and 13 tackles for loss. The Golden Hurricane turned it over five times and ended up with -73 net yards on the ground.
Either Wassink is going to be amazing, or this is going to get ugly.

What’s Going To Happen
The MSU formula should work. Don’t screw up on offense, let the defense dominate, get out with a win. There won’t be anything flashy about what the Spartans try to do as it gets through without much of a scratch against the guys down the road.
It will seem like WMU is in the game in the first half, but the offense will hit a dead stop in the second.
