Michigan State Soccer: Giuseppe Barone drafted in Third round of MLS draft to Montreal

Michigan State Men’s Soccer has quietly become quite the development system for MLS players, and that trend will continue this year as MSU midfielder Guiseppe Barone was drafted today in the Third Round of the 2021 MLS draft to Montreal (Club de Football Montreal) with the No. 63 overall pick.

Barone (who is also related to my former high school Spanish teacher, coincidentally) was one of 11 Big Ten players taken in the 2021 draft and he extends MSU’s MLS draft streak to four-straight seasons with a drafted player.

“First off, I am really happy for Giuseppe and his family. He has put in a lot of work and has had a great career at Michigan State,” MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. “Certainly, it was a little difficult at the end with injuries, that is probably why he dropped a little bit, but I think that Montréal is getting a steal. Giuseppe’s upside is huge; when healthy, he is definitely an MLS caliber player.”
