Michigan State’s Matt Harmon teeing it up at Rocket Mortgage Classic

Dan Gilbert isn’t the only former Spartan hoping to have a big weekend at the inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.

Former Spartan standout golfer Matt Harmon was a late addition to the tournament–he found out Monday morning according to the Detroit News.

Harmon, the 2007 Big Ten Golfer of the Year, has struggled to gain footing in his professional golf career. He has bounced around between development tours trying to earn his way onto the PGA full time. Harmon has played in a few PGA events, three Buick Invitationals from 2007-2009. His best finish was a tie for 52nd place. The Rocket Mortgage Classic will be his first PGA event since the ’09 Buick, having spent much of his time playing on the Web.com tour, which was just renamed the Korn Ferry Tour.

A win this weekend, however unlikely it may be, would grant Harmon a PGA Tour card and a full-time spot on golf’s highest level. He can also hope to place well enough to earn FedEx cup points that could propel him to PGA Tour membership next season. Either way, for Korn Ferry Tour players like Harmon, chances at PGA Tour events are few and far between and provide immense opportunities to advance a career.

Harmon is currently 139th in Korn Ferry Tour standings, with the top 25 advancing to the PGA and the top 75 getting a shot to win a playoff tournament to get to the PGA.

As of publishing Harmon was +1 through 12 holes and tied for 66th place.
