Michigan State remains No. 6 in latest Big Ten power rankings

It was a pretty ho-hum week in the conference so the latest Big Ten power rankings look a lot like they did last week, especially at the top of the conference.

Michigan State remains at No. 6 after beating Indiana 40-31. Ohio State tops the ranking with Wisconsin, Penn State, Iowa and Michigan rounding out the top five.

Of MSU, the author Rainer Sabin writes, “MSU was involved in the most deceiving score of the weekend. The Spartans claimed a 40-31 victory over Indiana. But this was a game that was won in the final seconds, when Matt Coghlin booted a 21-yard field goal to vault MSU ahead. Most surprising – and concerning — was the fact the Hoosiers produced 31 points against the Spartans, which came into the game ranked 10th in scoring defense.”

(P.S. don’t use things like “total defense” or “scoring offense” to measure a team’s quality four games into the season.)

Penn State and Iowa flip-flopped this week after the Nittany Lions drubbed Maryland on the road. That’s the only change in the top 6.

Michigan State now hits the road to take on Ohio State, a game that is sure to spice things up atop the Big Ten.
