JOHN OUTLAND AWARD, RAEQUAN WILLIAMS

MSU’s big man up front has been a major factor in their top-ranked rushing defense these past two years (#1 in 2018, #2 in 2017). Michigan State is expected to keep that going this year behind Raequan Williams’ excellent play. Because of this, he has been named to the Outland Award Watch List. The award is given to the best interior defensive lineman in college football.

JIM THORPE AWARD, JOSIAH SCOTT

Josiah Scott missed the first eight games last year, but started the last five and earned himself the Redbox Bowl Defensive MVP trophy for his strong play. Now, he is already on the nation’s radar as, potentially, the next in a long line of Spartan defensive backs who have broken out. The Thorpe Award is given to the best defensive back in college football and I think Scott has a strong chance to secure that award.

PAUL HORNUNG AWARD, CONNOR HEYWARD

After placing as a finalist for the award last year, Connor Heyward has to be one of the favorites to win the Paul Hornung award this year. A dynamic kick returner who can also catch passes and run the ball, expect to see a lot of Heyward for the Spartans this season.

Michigan State’s two pillars on the defense these past few years have been Joe Bachie and Kenny Willekes and both players have now entered the national spotlight as two of the top defensive players in the league. Both players are on the Bednarik Award Watch List which is given to the top defensive player in college football.

LOU GROZA AWARD, MATT COGHLIN

After being a semifinalist for the award last year, Matt Coghlin is again listed on the Groza Award Watch List. The award is given annually to the top placekicker in college football. Coghlin was First Team All-Big Ten last season and should be considered a frontrunner for the award.
