Michigan State No. 1 in first KenPom rankings of the season

If you aren’t yet, it’s time to get familiar with kenpom.com.

For my money (literally) it’s the single best college basketball site on the internet and that’s not just because Michigan State will be starting the season ranked No. 1 in KenPom.

Purdue (No.7), Maryland (No. 16) and Michigan (No. 21) are the next three Big Ten teams in the ranking.

For the unfamiliar, KenPom rankings are based on what is called “Adjusted Efficiency”. Simply put, it measures how good a basketball team is based on a variety of factors including result, strength of schedule, tempo, etc. It has proven to be incredibly good at predicting what teams will be good and what teams will have NCAA Tournament success.

It will be written about a lot in this space throughout the season and I encourage anyone with the means who wants to really know college basketball to subscribe to KenPom. (Note: I do not have any type of connection or affiliation with KenPom, I’m just a huge fan).

Michigan State is expected to have the No. 1 offense and No. 5 defense in all of college basketball this season per the KenPom numbers. They are projected to go 24-5 this season and 16-4 in the Big Ten.

The Spartans will open their season November 5 against KenPom No. 2 Kentucky in the Champions Classic.
