Michigan State Football ranked #24 in ESPN rankings

We are getting closer to football season, but since we are still in preseason college football ranking season, let’s take a quick look at ESPN’s recent power ranking. ESPN had Michigan State a little lower than the Amway Coaches Poll, that’s probably because the coaches are smarter, right? ESPN has the Spartans ranked #24 compared to the #20 ranking they received in the Coaches Poll.

Here is what ESPN‘s Tom VanHaaren said about the Spartans’ ranking:

“Quarterback Brian Lewerke dealt with an injury last season that severely hampered the Spartans’ offense. Michigan State finished 115th in total yards per game on offense and continually relied on its defense to keep the team in games. The defense returns leaders Joe Bachie and Kenny Willekes, and Lewerke is seemingly healthy. If Michigan State can keep Lewerke upright and productive, they should be able to improve on the 7-6 record from last season.”

This largely reflects my sentiment for most of the summer and I’m glad they acknowledged Lewerke’s health. If he can stay healthy, I think this team’s ceiling will surprise some people.
