A Michigan State Football great and a legendary figure in the sports world, Charlie Wedemeyer, will be honored this year with an induction into the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame as part of their 2021 class, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Wedemeyer played under Duffy Daugherty from 1966-1968, where he won a championship with the team in 1966 as a quarterback and wide receiver.
Wedemeyer is most famous for his time after Michigan State. As a high school football coach for Los Gatos High School, he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease in 1978. Wedemeyer’s fight with his disease was chronicled in the 1988 movie Quiet Victory: The Charlie Wedemeyer Story.
Wedemeyer passed away on June 3rd, 2010 from pneumonia, which was caused by a surgery he had.
