Michigan State falls to no. 9 in latest Big Ten Football Power Rankings

This one stings. After yet another loss to a conference rival, this time at home, Michigan State has fallen to ninth in the latest Big Ten Football Power Rankings from the Detroit Free Press. That puts them behind Illinois, for some perspective. Michigan State heads into their second bye week of the season with a lot to work on if they want to improve their standing. They were ranked 7th before their loss to Penn State Saturday.

Here is what Rainer Sabin of the Detroit Free Press said about the Spartans:

“The scene Saturday at Spartan Stadium was a depressing one. The stands were empty. The skies were gray as a steady downpour soaked the field. Michigan State looked miserable as its offense sputtered in the wet conditions. So too did its coach Mark Dantonio, who glowered as his team suffered a third-straight loss by a margin of at least three touchdowns. The energy appears to have been sucked out of this program.”
