Michigan State basketball at Penn State: Stream, broadcast info, three things to watch, prediction

Michigan State basketball heads to Penn State on Wednesday evening for a conference matchup against the Nittany Lions, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

The Spartans enter this matchup looking to snap a two-game losing street, with both losses coming against subpar teams last week. Notre Dame blew out the Spartans a week ago and Northwestern stunned Michigan State in their Big Ten opener on Sunday evening. Michigan State is 5-3 overall this year and 0-1 in Big Ten play.

Penn State is also looking to rebound from a loss in their last game out — a double-overtime defeat at Clemson last week. The Nittany Lions have gotten off to a strong start at 6-2 on the year and know a win over the Spartans will only bolster their NCAA Tournament resume this year.

Three Things to Watch

Here are three things to watch out for in this matchup between Michigan State and Penn State:

Handling road environment better this week: Michigan State was blitzed by Notre Dame in their first true road game of the season last week. That game got out of hand early and was over before halftime. The same can happen on Wednesday if Michigan State fails to come out with more energy to start the game.

Defending the perimeter and dribble penetration: The Spartans have been exposed defensively the last two games in two key areas: defending the perimeter and dribble penetration. Notre Dame and Northwestern both used sharp shooting from outside in the first half of those games, and the Wildcats especially were able to leverage that into dribble penetration in the second half to earn the win.

Finding easy buckets on offense: The statistics don’t necessarily show it against Northwestern but Michigan State is struggling to find easy buckets on offense right now. They are primarily a jump shooting team and if you aren’t hitting your open looks then you are in trouble. I’d like to see Michigan State get to the rim more for easier buckets, and also draw some more fouls along the way.

Game Prediction

Prediction: Penn State 71, MSU 65

It may be a little too early in the season to call this a must-win game but it certainly is a big one for the Spartans. Opening 0-2 in Big Ten play would be a bad look for Michigan State but right now I’m not confident this team can string enough plays together to pick up a road conference win. They’ll be better when Malik Hall is back but unfortunately that won’t be on Wednesday.
