Michigan State all-time leading punter Greg Montgomery passes away at the age of 55

Greg Montgomery, Michigan State’s all-time leading punter who also spent nine years in the NFL, passed away last Sunday at the age of 55, according to an obituary posted by Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

At Michigan State, Greg Montgomery averaged 45.2 yards per punt, which is still a school record. He also set a Big Ten record with an average of 49.7 yards per punt in league games in 1986. In 1996, he was named to the Spartans Centennial Super Squad.

Montgomery was drafted in the Third Round of the 1988 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers where he was named to the Pro Bowl team in 1993. He was also named First-Team All-Pro that year.

Montgomery would go on to play a season for the Detroit Lions in 1994 before ending his career with the Baltimore Ravens.
