As the ranks of undefeated college football teams thinned Saturday, Michigan remained.
And Sunday, the Wolverines stayed No. 2 in both the Amway Coaches Poll, administered by USA TODAY and the Associated Press poll. The debut rankings from the College Football Playoff committee come at 7 p.m. Tuesday, on ESPN.
Michigan's 32-23 win over Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich., had a closer final score than many anticipated, but that didn't seem to bother the voters. U-M opened a 27-10 halftime lead before the game got within seven points with one second remaining.
The remaining undefeated teams, joining Michigan: No. 1 Alabama, No. 3 Clemson, No. 4 Washington and Western Michigan. The Broncos moved up to No. 18 in the coaches poll and No. 17 in the AP.
U-M's No. 2 ranking is its highest since the last time it began a season 8-0, in 2006. The Wolverines got to 11-0 back then, before losing to Ohio State.
Saturday was a nail-biter for most of last week's Top 10 in the coaches poll, as Clemson squeaked out a 37-34 win over Florida State, Washington beat Utah, 31-24, over Utah, No. 5 Louisville won, 32-25, over Virginia, and the No. 8 Buckeyes held on for a 24-20 win over Northwestern.
The weekend carnage took down four undefeated teams: co-No. 6 Nebraska (which lost to No. 11 Wisconsin), co-No. 6 Baylor (to Texas), No. 9 West Virginia (to Oklahoma State) and No. 13 Boise State (to Wyoming).
