Michigan Parts Ways With Men’s Basketball Coach Juwan Howard

The University of Michigan is making a change to the leadership of its men’s basketball program, as it parted ways with head coach Juwan Howard after five seasons on Friday.

“After a comprehensive review of the program, I have decided that Juwan will not return as our men’s basketball coach,” athletic director Warde Manual said in a statement. “Juwan is among the greatest Wolverines to ever be associated with our basketball program. I know how much it meant, to not only Juwan, but to all of us for him to return here to lead this program.

“Despite his love of his alma mater and the positive experience that our student-athletes had under his leadership, it was clear to me that the program was not living up to our expectations and not trending in the right direction.”

In his five seasons in Ann Arbor, Howard led the Wolverines to an 87–72 record with two NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the Elite Eight in the 2020-21 season, and a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2021-22.

However, the Wolverines have missed the tournament in each of the last two seasons, with Michigan going just 8–24 overall this season with a 3–17 record in Big Ten play.
