Michigan man accused of killing animals because 'he likes' it hit with 125 wildlife charges

A Michigan man accused of killing wolves, bald eagles and other animals "because he likes to do it" has been hit with more than 100 wildlife charges.

Kurt Duncan pleaded not guilty to all 125 misdemeanor counts during an arraignment in Chippewa County district court on Wednesday, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said in a news release.

The 56-year-old from Pickford is accused of illegally harvesting 18 wolves _ which are protected under state law _ over the past 18 months and killing and disposing of three bald eagles.

Bald eagles are also protected under state law as well as the federal Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Both animals are also on the federal endangered species list.

Duncan faces up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine for each wolf and each eagle as well as restitution of $1,500 per eagle and $500 per wolf. He's additionally facing up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine each for the other wildlife crime charges.

Authorities served Duncan with four search warrants in March, according to MassLive. Other species involved in the charges include deer, turkey, bear and bobcat.

DNR law enforcement officers said he was using the animals for a range of reasons, including crafts, selling, or disposing of them, and stated that he was catching the animals because he could and "likes to do it."

Additional suspects have been identified and charges are expected to be filed soon.
