Michigan has over 100,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus

DETROIT _ Michigan has lost six more people to the novel coronavirus and 741 more people have tested positive, according to numbers reported Friday by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

The state's totals are now 6,446 confirmed deaths and 100,699 confirmed cases. While Michigan has done better than most states in the U.S. in containing the virus, it alone has more cases than countries such as Egypt, the Dominican Republic, Japan and China.

According to Dr. Peter Gulick, an infectious disease specialist and associate professor of medicine at Michigan State University, the state may need to prepare for 100,000 additional new cases by mid-January.

"Nothing has changed as far as the virus goes," Gulick said to the Detroit Free Press earlier this month. "We have nothing beyond what we had in March (to treat it or prevent it). So, we still have to go by the old principles: Wear face masks, social distancing, don't go into crowds."
