Michigan football to wear maize alternate uniform for 2017 opener vs. Florida

The wait is over.

For the first time in the Jim Harbaugh era _ and for the first time at Michigan since the 2014 season _ the Wolverines will wear alternate uniforms.

And they'll be rather bright.

Michigan unveiled an all-maize uniform scheme Monday afternoon, the plan is to wear the new look Saturday during the season-opener against Florida at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas (3:30 p.m., ABC). It's unknown, as of now, if this will be a one-time situation or something Michigan brings back throughout the year.

Michigan and Florida will both wear special uniforms for the game, with Florida's being all blue.

Earlier this summer, Harbaugh said Michigan would wear at least one. And that he was able to speak with Nike and Jordan Brand reps about an alternate uniform concept shortly after Michigan entered a contract with the apparel provider in August of 2016.

Harbaugh had input on the uniforms and he took input from players as well.

"It's always cool to wear something new," Michigan fullback Henry Poggi said. "I'm a pretty simple guy. I'm not decked out in much crazy stuff. But we're excited about it."

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said last week that the decision to wear the uniforms _ and when to wear them _ was Harbaugh's. Not his.

Alternate uniforms have not been part of the program during Harbaugh's tenure _ not counting the change he made to Michigan's now all-white road look. The last time Michigan wore an alternate uniform was the all-blue Adidas-produced concept the team wore during a night game against Penn State in 2014.

The alternate uniforms were rather common during the Hoke-Dave Brandon era, as Michigan wore several different combinations _ from "Legacy" home and away jerseys, to special bowl uniforms _ during both the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
